Description
A new paragraph is started and it is given the heading specified by heading or subheading . There can be no $ or # characters in either heading or subheading . In addition, leading and trailing white space in both heading and subheading is ignored.

Cross Reference Linking
You can specify a particular heading , using the xref command with the specified heading . You can specify a particular subheading , using the xref command with the previous heading and subheading .

Aindex
The aindex command can connect the head command to the mindex command. (To make this connection, it must appear before the head command.) If this is the case, each head command automatically generates a request of the form
     $mindex heading$$
 In this case, occurrences of the escape character in heading has the special meaning defined for the mindex command. These characters do not appear in the displayed output nor is it part of the corresponding cross reference link text.

A similar effect can be obtained using the aindex command to connect the subhead command to the mindex command.

Example Heading
The input 
 
     $head Topic$$
will result in the heading below:

Topic
This heading is the result of the example above.

Example Subheading
The input 
 
     $subhead Topic$$
will result in the subheading below:

Topic
This subheading is the result of the example above.

Reference
Be aware that certain special characters in the heading have trouble when used as links in certain browsers. For example, I have had trouble with the forward slash in a heading using Netscape 4.5 to view the results.
